Lithium-Ion cell Testing

Lithium-Ion cell Testing

The Battery Testing Laboratory has added a 24 x 50 Amp channel 0-6V tester, which has in-situ impedance analysis capabilities for lithium-ion and other types of cells.  The cell tester interfaced with a Weiss explosion proof temperature chamber especially designed for lithium-ion testing and can perform testing at temperatures ranging from -40°C to +90°C. The laboratory’s SANAS 17025 scope of accredited testing includes IEC 62620 (Secondary lithium cells and batteries for industrial applications) and IEC 62660 (Secondary lithium ion cells for the propulsion of electric road vehicles).

The facility has an 8 x 500 milliamp cell tester channels which allows for the testing of custom built button or cylindrical cells ranging from 0-10V.  Each of the eight channels can operate independently, enabling multiple cells or batteries to be tested at the same time.

With the facilities range of equipment and infrastructure, testing service can be provided for a variety of commercially available cells that include pouch, prismatic, cylindrical and button type cells or assist with the development of new cell technologies.

Due to the safety concerns increasing, when moving from the low voltage (0-6V) to high voltage (400-600V) the Battery Testing Laboratory’s philosophy is to develop the necessary skills to perform testing on cells (0-6V), then modules (60-100V) and lastly battery packs (400-600V).

The uYilo Battery Testing Laboratory is the first to be accredited to test lithium-ion cells according to IEC 62620 (Secondary lithium cells and batteries for industrial applications) in South Africa. It will be extending its scope of services to include lithium-ion cell testing according to IEC62133 (Safety requirements for portable sealed secondary cells and for batteries for use in portable applications).
