Materials Characterisation Laboratory

The uYilo materials characterisation laboratory was established at the NMMU in 2000 and was formerly known as Port Elizabeth Technikon Materials Resource Centre (PETMRC).  Its primary function is support the local lead-acid battery industry by performing routine analysis on raw materials used in the production of lead-acid batteries. Although the laboratory is not accredited it is operated within the confines of ISO17025 under the quality management system as the battery testing laboratory.

The uYilo Material’s Characterisation Laboratory’s services include:

  • Powder X-ray Diffraction (PXRD)
  • Laser Particle Size Analysis (PSA)
  • X-Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (XRF)
  • Melt flow indexing of Thermoplasts (MFI)
  • Surface area analysis of powders (BET)
  • Thermo-gravimetrical analysis (TGA)
  • Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC)

Due to the diverse application of the services provided, the laboratory also performs analysis on samples (Pharmaceuticals, Geoscience, Engineering, etc.) not typically associated with lead-acid batteries.  Please see individual techniques for further information.
